Aiguille du Midi (3842m) Variations

The Superb Aiguille du Midi Above the Chamonix Valley

The lift station is just under the summit spire & the Cosmiques Hut can be seen on the lower rock buttress centre left. The left hand skyline leading to the Hut is the Arete Laurence & the up to the station is the Cosmiques Arete. The right hand snow ridge out of the station is the Midi - Plan traverse & the glacial plateau infront of it all is the Col du Midi.

The Descent & Reascent of the Midi Snow Ridge is a Mountaineering Event Itself

This famous snow ridge provides the link between the Aiguille du Midi station and the glacial plateau of the Col du Midi. Conditions vary from wide track, warm sun & crowds to wild whipped up Alaskan corniced snow ridge. Either way, it is always a mountain event!

Mixed Mountaineering Ridge Bound for the Cosmiques Hut

The area around the Col du Midi offers the mountaineer everything from a highly scenic glacial stroll to technical ice & mixed climbs.

The Famous Snow Arete From The Aiguille Du Midi

This superb snow ridge must be negotiated just to exit the station and reach the Col du Midi Glacier and lots of other routes. Beyond the prominent steep rocky skyline left of the North Face of the Grandes Jorasses is the Walker Spur and the Big Peaks of the Swiss Valais Alps can be seen to the East.

Steep Snow Pitch Above The Col du Plan

This fine circuit was completed in an enjoyable half day from the Midi station. A narrow snow ridge and steep exposed snow descent leads to the Col du Plan. Here some teams continue on the long aller retour to the summit of the Plan, but a much shorter and fun variant is to climb this micro north facing snow slope and return to the station.
