Chevalier Couloir (AD, 300m), Petite Aiguille Verte

Entering The Chevalier Couloir From The Glacier Des Rognons

A magnificent position high above the Argentiere Basin with great views to the Aiguilles Chardonnet, Argentiere, Mont Dolent and the big north faces of the Verte & Droites. The bergschrund can be tricky but was very easy today in late December 2015.

Steady 45 Degree Snow Climbing In The Lower Chevalier Couloir

The route can contain small mixed and icy passages but today was in fine easy condition with a good track up continuous snow slopes with the occasional tiny step. Thus an enjoyable ascent for the physicality and ambiance rather than technical interest!

High In The Couloir With Exposed Slopes Below

Some teams had skied the couloir but we were glad to be ascending it with axes & crampons today!

The Final Section Of The Couloir Leads To The Famous Demi Lune Col On The Petite Verte North Face

From the Demi Lune a variety of routes take snow & mixed ground up to join the Voie Normale and on to the summit of the Petite Verte. It's also possible to descend the north face from here in several rappels if the Voie Normale is very busy or the hour is late!
