The Superb Summit Ridge of the Weissmies, Swiss Alps

A magnificent mountaineering position and great vista of the Swiss Valais Alps to the West and Lake Maggiore & The Italian Plains to the East

Enjoyable Mid-Summer Conditions on the Weissmies South Ridge

This rock ridge provides a pleasant and direct scrambling route to the snowy summit ridge. It is climbable in most conditions and provides a good training route for teams wanting to develop the skills of moving together on broken alpine rock & mixed ridges.

Dawn Arrives Over Saastal & The Almageller Hut

Taken an hour or so above the Hut on the ascent of the Weissmies. The iconic alpine image of head torches 'bobbling' up the mountain. The mountain panorama runs (left to right) Strahlhorn, Rimfischorn, Allalinhorn, Alphubel, Tasch, Dom, Lenspitze, Nadelhorn

Snowy Mountaineering Conditions on the (usually) Rocky South Ridge

An advantage of this route is that it can be climbed under dry or snowy conditions and is fun either way!

The Glacial Northern Flank of the Mountain

This glacial northern flank of the mountain provides an interesting journey and relatively quick descent down to the good cafe at Hohsaas. Care & attention is still required as the route features crevasses and passes under several large ice cliffs (seracs).

The Classic Long Swiss Alpine Mountain Hut Walk Begins

The journey from Saas Almagel to the Almageller Hut is a classic tough Swiss Mountain Hut walk of around 4.5 hours. Very scenic with a good café stop en route.

Some Rope Work & Mountain Training Skills En Route

This large boulder is just above the mountain hut & cafe at Alamageller Alp, just under half way along the walk to the hut.

Karen Traversing the Lower Snow Fields on the Weissmies South Face

In early season these give rapid access to the rocky South Ridge. Later in the Season the approach becomes harder & slower as more bouldery rough ground is exposed.

Weissmies Traverse Team on the Summit

After an 0400 breakfast at the Almageller Hut. Heading to the Weissmies hut via a good Swiss mountain lunch at the Hohsaas station

The Descent of the Northern Flank of the Weissmies

Done early to try & ensure good snow conditions all the way down the glacier. Lenspitze & Nadelhorn visible on the other side of the Saastal.

High On The Weissmeis - The Brilliant Summit Ridge

David & Wade enjoy very fine early summer conditions on our 3 day Climb The Weissmeis Course in June 2015. An excellent 3 days where both the Weissmeis & Lagginhorn were climbed with 2 nights in fine old school mountain huts.
