Enjoyable Mid-Summer Conditions on the Weissmies South Ridge
This rock ridge provides a pleasant and direct scrambling route to the snowy summit ridge. It is climbable in most conditions and provides a good training route for teams wanting to develop the skills of moving together on broken alpine rock & mixed ridges.
Dawn Arrives Over Saastal & The Almageller Hut
Taken an hour or so above the Hut on the ascent of the Weissmies. The iconic alpine image of head torches 'bobbling' up the mountain. The mountain panorama runs (left to right) Strahlhorn, Rimfischorn, Allalinhorn, Alphubel, Tasch, Dom, Lenspitze, Nadelhorn
The Snowy Summit Ridge Section is Reached at the Top of the Rocky South Ridge
The Fine Portjengrat (3654m) traverse can be seen on the other side of the Zmischbengenpass
Snowy Mountaineering Conditions on the (usually) Rocky South Ridge
An advantage of this route is that it can be climbed under dry or snowy conditions and is fun either way!
The Glacial Northern Flank of the Mountain
This glacial northern flank of the mountain provides an interesting journey and relatively quick descent down to the good cafe at Hohsaas. Care & attention is still required as the route features crevasses and passes under several large ice cliffs (seracs).
The Classic Long Swiss Alpine Mountain Hut Walk Begins
The journey from Saas Almagel to the Almageller Hut is a classic tough Swiss Mountain Hut walk of around 4.5 hours. Very scenic with a good café stop en route.

This large boulder is just above the mountain hut & cafe at Alamageller Alp, just under half way along the walk to the hut.
