The fresh snow last night, today and tonight will hopefully be a game changer for the lower altitude snow volume around the Mont Blanc Massif. It has snowed a lot…and is still snowing…and is going to snow a lot more tonight. The powder was great fun to ski today, deep and light. We stuck to the more mellow slopes around the meadows of Saint Gervais, Les Communailles and St. Nicholas de Veroce and had some great skiing. Our intro touring team were skiing well and enjoying the pow…and we did not do much ski touring today! Although did check out the new sign posted ski touring trail up through the woods above Les Communailles.
The avalanche risk was high today and there was at least 30cms of fresh snow in the upper resort this morning with plenty more fresh snow through the day and plenty more coming tonight. A few teams set off sloughs on the steeper slopes and the avalanche hazard category went from 2/5 yesterday to 4/5 today and is 4/5 again for tomorrow. We enjoyed some good short touring journeys above Megeve Jaillet and the link to La Giettaz yesterday and made the fun trip down the ‘Eperon’ and lower valley to Le Plan which was quite well filled in with the stream crossings easier than sometimes! This is also now well signposted as a ski touring route despite being a narrow path with numerous lumpy stream crossings and plenty of folk skiing down it!
Whilst there was some great snow about in the meadows, snow cover under the tree canopy is still poor and there are a lot of bushes still showing through on some classic off piste itineraries. More than 1 guided team were seen skinning back out of the bushes or even ‘going on safari’ through the trees when itineraries which were plain sailing last year, were tried for the first time this season. This should now improve a bit after over half a metre of snow has fallen over these couple of days and the snow volume in the high mountains will be even better.
A great weekend on our Chamonix based intro ski touring weekend. We have intro ski touring course places available on our February weekend at the lovely Italian Rifugio Bonatti and March weekend at the Swiss Grand St Bernard Monastery.
