9th January 2019, Combloux Powder Ski Touring

Magic to be back proper winter ski touring in Combloux.  Lots of fresh snow, lots of wind, cloud, blowing snow, trail breaking, fresh tracks, rosy cheeks…we loved it!  There seemed to be more snow in the Evasion area this morning than Chamonix although it sounded like there was also some fun powder to ski at the Grands Montets.  Slightly less so at Courmayeur which was cold, with some sunny spells and only around 5cms of fresh snow.   At around 1800m at Combloux it was more like 15-20cms which gave some fun fresh tracks and a welcome end to the drought of fresh snow since Christmas Eve.

Fresh tracks off the Christomet lift at Combloux

The Petit Croise Baulet had a few teams enjoying the fresh snow despite the stiff breeze higher up!  The classic descent route back to the Col de Jaillet is pretty bushy and generally fairly poor but there was some good skiing in the upper meadows.   We also enjoyed a great descent of the Eperon and the tour de 3 Chalets!  It was 6 chalets today as we skinned back out to avoid the long low altitude woody valley descent back to the pistes of Le Plan.  There is now a signposted ski touring route heading up this way and carrying along the summit ridge to the summit of the Christomet.

A dream of powder snow! Great to have some proper winter weather and fresh tracks at Combloux in early Jan 2019

We now have just one place left on the Intro Ski Touring weekend in Chamonix on the 12-13th Jan and it looks like there is some more fresh snow inbound whilst staying cool.
