Just returned from an immensely beneficial weekend’s rock climbing in the Lake District arranged by High Mountain Guides, with highly experienced guide Robin Beadle. Starting with a soaking ascent of Corvus on Raven Crag on Saturday; we completed Brown slabs in a single pitch, and Little Chamonix, both at Shepherds’ Crag on Sunday.

This has increased my skill and confidence immeasurably and now I’ve climbed a V Diff for the first time! I’m sure this has moved me closer to my goal of the MatterhornChris

My wife & I just finished 2 amazing days of rock climbing training in Chamonix. Our objective was to become safe & proficient at the basics to be able to go out with our kids & enjoy a days climbing in the mountains safely. Given the stakes involved we decided to get some proper instruction, and Rob delivered in the best possible way. There was great communication leading up to the dates. Rob really made sure he knew what we were trying to achieve, tailoring the training perfectly. He answered all our questions, advised on kit & watched the weather until the last minute! First day we woke up to snow in Chamonix. Rob’s great knowledge of the valley  meant that wasn’t a problem as he knew of an overhanging face where we started our training under the protection of the rock, warm & dry. We were both novices with a few indoor climbs and knot-tying YouTube videos under our belts, and Rob pitched things just right. We were soon climbing together, building confidence and skills on 3s and 4s. Rob’s lovely style of teaching was to give us a bit of rope (pun intended), but always be there to safeguard, encourage, challenge our decisions and reinforce key messages, mixing the practical techniques of climbing with the rope theory in just the right proportions.

Adam lead climbing training at Les Gaillands in Chamonix

The second day was a perfect blue sky day at the incredible Les Gaillands crag. Sunny warm rock, the unmatched back drop of the Mont Blanc range and even an impressively horned Ibex balancing expertly on the rock nearby. Rob started where we left off, helping us consolidate our skills with some lead climbing and top-roping. Then we moved on to some brilliant multi-pitch climbs and long abseils, learning new skills and techniques all the time, but above all, having lots of fun. We tried & failed proudly on an overhang (6a I like to think), learned how to use a GriGri, rested tired feet while Rob taught us about anchors & slings, before finishing with a long climb to reinforce everything we had learned. After two full days on the rock we were mentally and physically exhausted, but feeling elated and fully prepared to go it alone. Thanks Rob for two wonderful and unforgettable days climbing. It was a joy to be coached by you.  Adam and Chiara

Had a fantastic ski weekend with Rob. The weather forecast prevented plan A for tour to the monastery but Rob was great in suggesting great options for 2 days making most of weather forecast in other places…so 2 days in Italy. We had a great group with lots of laughs and got some touring, fresh ski lines and fab fresh powder tree skiing.

Rob’s excellent knowledge meant we got lots of fresh powder lines and had awesome day out enjoying the winter mountains.

When doing the Vallee Blanche with Rob’s team last year, I was inspired to try ski touring and booked on an introductory weekend. As before Rob’s organisation and communication was excellent and he teamed me up with Gav who was my guide and mentor for the trip.
It was everything I’d hoped it would be. Out of sight of lifts, pistes and for the most part people, day 1 was a real trip but also a skill learning day. Day 2 was a day of heavy snow and a trip from Megeve to Petit Croisse Baulet was planned. What an enjoyable day as the snow fell. A mix of pleasant touring, then an ascent to the col, followed by a fantastic ski back down in fluffy powder. We even had a mock avalanche exercise thrown in.

The weather didn’t play ball, which meant we didn’t have a shot at the gran paradiso summit or MB. However, between Rob and Gav, other plans were made quickly, which led to some of the best climbing we have experienced. The Monte Rosa was outstanding, and we will be back for some more of that, plus get ourselves up MB.  Looking forward to our next trip with yourselves already…

Given today is now our rest day, I’d just thought I’d take a moment to say thank you. I have had a brilliant week. I think we had some tricky conditions to deal with but for me, this just added to the experience. I was of course disappointed not to summit but given the conditions, Gav absolutely made the right decision. Further to that, please pass on my thanks and forward him this email, he was exceptional. I learnt so much from him and always felt very safe.

Thanks for organizing this course, I really enjoyed all parts of the program.  The Gran Paradiso course was well designed and well executed, and overall provided an excellent introduction to alpine mountaineering. Our guide, Kev, was instrumental in the program success. On the mountain, he guided and pushed us hard just the right amount to literally reach new highs, while always keeping us safe and well informed. He was happy to share from his vast knowledge and taught us the basics of moving on the glacier and preparing for the climb. Chapeau! Chen.

Having just completed the February Mont Blanc training weekend in Aviemore I wanted to say thank you to HMG for organising a really enjoyable and informative course.  The weather was wintery but the flexibility of the guides to accommodate the weather and still put us through our paces meant we got a lot done.  Rob answered several kit questions before the course and that stood me in great stead.

Training for Mont Blanc – in mid winter in the Northern Cairngorms

If you are thinking about whether to go on the course, I can say that it is a great opportunity to benchmark your kit and fitness, the safety and movement skills learned give confidence and the amount of practical information about actually climbing Mont Blanc that comes from general discussions with others and the guide is invaluable.  Definitely recommended.

An early autumn ascent of Mont Blanc was a special experience that I will cherish for a long while to come.  Climbing above the cloud line with Mont Blanc largely to ourselves was superb. The views across the Chamonix valley and of nearby Aiguille de Bionnassay were utterly arresting. Rob and Gav are true professionals and unbelievably fit – I would not wish to be climbing in the high Alps without guides of such calibre. I was particularly impressed with how Rob had the ability (at over 4000 metres) to recite fascinating stories of his climbing experiences without any heavy breathing whatsoever!
The snowy summer ‘path’ approach to Tête Rousse from Nid d’Aigle.
There was a true expedition feel to the climb given the low October temperatures, lack of other climbers, and use of Winter rooms in the Tete Rousse and Goûter huts. Climbing the Grand Couloir and ridges above the Vallot Hut were particular highlights, and Gav took some stunning photos along the way. We did not encounter any other climbers in the 1000 metres between the Goûter hut and the summit – a real treat. The experience has whetted my appetite for further climbing on the Alpine 4000m peaks and further afield. It was utterly fantastic.

I’ve done two trips guided by Rob this year and both experiences have been excellent. The first time I took my son and brother in law to climb the Gran Paradiso, unfortunately due to Covid restrictions this wasn’t possible but Rob gave us a fantastic alternative at short notice and we achieved all of our objectives. My son (16) struggled at times but Rob was really encouraging and patient with him which enabled him to gain a huge amount of confidence and a big sense of achievement. The plan was pitched at exactly the right level.

Dawn on the ascent of Castor from Rifugio Quintino Sella
The second time Rob planned a trip with a couple of days notice and all the objectives were met. This time climbing Castore at 4228m. A fantastic experience in great company. I’ve been guided before in but what I really enjoyed the most about Rob was the time taken to explain safety procedures and indeed the reasons behind all aspects of mountaineering. We learnt a lot and you don’t always get this!  Not only did I have a great time but I now have a plan for future climbs to progress on my mountaineering journey…

I’m in the early stages of training to become a middle-aged mountain guide. Water ice climbing was a gaping hole in my skillset. I contacted Rob to help fill that hole and he structured two perfect days of active, hands-on instruction.  Rob tailored our time on the ice to maximise our objectives over the two days and is a highly professional, thoughtful, diligent, and communicative guide.

Solid ice making for secure but not rapid climbing and sometimes more of a north face atmosphere than a cascade!

He was able to balance the sometimes competing demands of moving efficiently and smoothly through a fun multi-pitch route where a dropped belay plate (me) and some ensuing rope tangles from the Italian Hitch slowed us down while carving out enough time to explain to me the “industrial” (to use Rob’s great descriptor) nuances of water ice climbing. Highly recommend High Mountain Guides whether you’re out for recreation, professional training, or somewhere in between! Michael.

Thank you for a great weekend and the pictures, Really magical!  An amazing introduction weekend to mountaineering!

Zermatt Mountaineering
High on the Breithorn Summit Ridge in autumn 2020

It gave me a great insight to what mountaineering entails; hiking/climbing up peaks while challenging yourself physically and mentally to reach the summit and have a breath taking view and realizing how much more there is to explore.  Would love to go again…Sophie

I enjoyed the week very much and it was great fun to climb with Tim. It took me back to my original start in rock climbing, which was climbing outcrops in the peak district. Yes, the weather was disappointing, but Tim managed to find somewhere for us to climb everyday.

Climb Monte Viso Course
Rifugio Quintino Sella, our Base Camp for Monte Viso. The South Face is quite a long approach from here but the equally very fine East Ridge (which has similarities to the Hornli Ridge on the Matterhorn) can be seen running diagonally left to right towards the summit starting from the top right corner of the main hut building.

So please convey my thanks to Tim for a great week’s climbing notwithstanding all the challenges of Covid and the weather. He was a great companion and I felt in safe hands. I look forward to being back climbing in Chamonix next year and having a go at the Mer de Glace face of the Grepon”. Peter.

Thanks for organising the course, it was a great experience and feel like I’ve learned a lot more than I anticipated I would. Both Andy and Steve were great all weekend and would look forward to climbing with them in the future.  I’m looking forward to the Scottish Highlands course in spring & Gran Paradiso & Mont Blanc course next summer! I had an amazing weekend and both Andy and Steve were excellent guides – both hugely experienced, knowledgeable and passionate. We learnt some key rope work as well as learning plenty about what to expect on the Mont Blanc ascent and acclimatisation climbs. Going over the Crib Goch route is something I’ve wanted to do for sometime, and to manage the entire horseshoe route on the Sunday was a real bonus. Can’t wait for Mont Blanc next year.  Daniel

The Matterhorn training weekend was amazing. Big Tim got the measure of us and was able to take us to unimagined heights and levels – full marks to Tim. What a legend he is. Outstanding instructor. Massive experience and knowledge. Excellent advice and guidance. Knowing how to instill confidence and when / how to commit – all within the safety envelope. I felt totally confident as his pupil.

The course balance worked well both in terms of acclimatisation and building technical difficulty. Huts were great – loved the Monte Rosa but also the relative isolation of the Ayas hut. No significant negatives for me – other than I need to get fitter for next time!  Dave was also excellent (I learnt a lot) and good company, so it was great fun as well.  Phil & Nick

Thank you once more for the excellent 2-day introduction into mountaineering. The first day on the glacier with instructions on specific techniques and continuous concrete advise were much appreciated. Especially loved you letting us try a hand at ice climbing. The 2nd day up Aiguille du Tour was amazing & continuous guidance on detailed elements throughout the climb were great.

Rob, many thanks for organising 5 days climbing in France, Italy and Switzerland. I appreciate you had to make multiple changes leading up to our arrival and then during the week due to various circumstances! The route choices were superb and the focus on the AD routes perfectly suited what I wanted to get out of the week.

Steep but easy juggy climbing in a great position near the central summit of the Breithorn.

Your continuous advice & commentary on techniques, ropework, progress etc was helpful and always inciteful. The pandemic prevented us from getting to the Eiger, but despite this it was a week full (there was no let up!) of great routes, glorious exposure and amazing situations! (You perhaps need to work on your definition of a short day!) Definitely be coming back for an Eiger week in 2021!

Many thanks for that very special outing, on a wonderful clear and panoramic journey. My first taste of climbing on ice and snow. Doing that together with you and Justine made me feel I was in safe hands. I particularly appreciated the way you kept yourself, and our plans open to new circumstances. Combined with your very careful and specific advice on technique as we got out there and looked up at you high above us on the ice and snow, gave me a sense of confidence that allowed me to try that brief but exhilarating climb up the ice face.
This was to round off a great day in a part of the Alps that we didn’t know well but may now come back to. Gordon.

I could not have been more pleased with the tour and with Kev. It was perfect for me—a true introduction to ski mountaineering, with kick turns and ropework. I felt like I learned a lot without ever being in over my head. I’ve hiked a bit in the Aiguilles Rouges, and I love the complex terrain and ever-changing dramatic scenery. There’s nothing like skinning for a while, remembering to look over your shoulder, and be staring right at the North Face of the Grand Jorasses.

Kev was not only good company, but I was quite impressed with his guiding skills. I very much appreciated his thoughtful approach to risk management. Halfway down the descent, we switched to axes and crampons for a bit to cross a significant patch of ice, which other skiers had fallen on. I also liked how he always kept me informed about where we were headed, what to expect, etc. Good communication really helps make for an enjoyable day. Many thanks to you both for a great experience. I’ll be back!  Dave.

It was a great few days thanks & a good suggestion by you to do the Weissmies. I loved the route – a lovely but fairly gentle walk to the hut and some good climbing in the sunshine on the Dri Hornli. Watching the sunrise at the Zwischbergenpass was great, and although I started to flag a little toward the top of the southeast ridge, the scrambling was fairly straight forward on good dry rock. The summit snow ridge was comfortable – not too exposed for me, and the views to the Mischabel range and Bernese Oberland absolutely stunning! Overall, a really great coupe of days. Dylan was an excellent guide I’ve learnt a lot more and the Weissmies trip has given me more confidence and inspiration to tackle similar routes.

Thanks Rob, yes very pleased to have pulled it off and particularly enjoyable having Neil with us.  Also having an extra night in MR hutte was very enjoyable.  I was back at work yesterday but have enjoyed a lazy day at home today and have just finished watching Meru – they had cams the size of dinner plates – the closest we got to anything like that was at the Kitsch Inn!

Hi Rob,
Just a short note to say thanks v much again for a very enjoyable couple of days in the mountains. I might have a few moments but overall it does feel that I’m making incremental gains and gaining confidence, which I’m sure that we’ll continues to build upon in September.

Hi Rob – Thanks, I’m afraid we didn’t do as well as we should have and both struggled with the altitude. Although we put in a lot of training walks and felt fresh after walking up to Plan from the village there is a great difference between starting at 1000 m and 2800 m after a bad night!  Ric was really professional and coaxed us up the mountain well and he was also incredibly modest about his achievements – including bivvying on la Meije….

You run a very efficient operation and a pity we didn’t make it but ….
Best wishes, Francis

Just wanted to say a huge thanks for our Gran Paradiso course. Communication and organisation beforehand was great, together with a good choice of various hire equipment. On the trip we had a really nice group of similarly-minded people which definitely helped us gel as a team. Our guides Klemen and Gav were very helpful, encouraging and clearly have vast knowledge of their sport and the area we were in. They always made us feel safe and inspired confidence as we progressed through to a successful and hugely enjoyable summit day in great weather conditions!

An incredible weekend in the beautiful highlands of Scotland. This course surpassed my expectations in many ways: The quality of the guides, which was as high as can be expected, very thorough and very reassuring throughout; the beauty of the surrounding area; the great balance found between making it challenging but not too difficult; and above all, just how very fun it all was! Perfect as preparation for Mt Blanc, but I would also recommend as a standalone course as well, just for the sheer fun of it.

It is pretty safe to say that anybody who signs up to work with the High Mountain Guides does so because of their love of the mountains. In Rob it is clear to see that his love and passion lies in the mountains. This passion is equalled by the respect he has for them and is backed up by a deep and superior knowledge. I must admit that when I turned up a day early (as recommended by Rob!) to find my ski legs again I was a little disheartened to find myself in what would not be considered the best ski conditions at an icy wind swept Le Tour. How wrong I was, for the first morning of our ‘intro to ski touring’ weekend Rob had us in fresh powdery tracks! Thank you for a top weekend. I will definitely be coming back to enjoy and learn more with Rob and his team.

Many thanks for the photos and a good day out, it was highly enjoyable.  Rob found the location and the conditions for a fantastic day tour in what had proved to be a really thin & icy Chamonix Valley. Good conversation and helpful information throughout made for a really enjoyable day.  Thanks,  Stephen

Hi Rob/Calum

I had a terrific day thanks, going just the right amount outside my comfort zone to feel pushed but not finishing up a nervous wreck! Calum was great company and gave me total confidence.

I will be in touch again, either for the Matterhorn training weekend or a similar guided day.

First all of thank you for the training course with Andy – an amazing and experienced guide that was able to make my first real mountaineering baby steps to be a right proportion of fun and challenge (despite very rainy second day 🙂  ).
Please keep me posted on opportunities for Gran Paradiso & Mont Blanc courses.  Thanks again for the opportunity to get familiar with mountaineering equipment and techniques with a great guide in the beautiful setting of Snowdonia.

Thank you for organising the Snowdonia Matterhorn training weekend.  I had a fantastic time with my climbing partner, Debbie and our guide Ric Potter. Even the weather was great.  Our guide, Ric had a great way of explaining everything, clear and easy to understand. He inspired confidence in our equipment, our ability and our trust in him. He really showed us everything we needed to know, watched and corrected where necessary and praised where it was due.
I would certainly recommend Ric to anyone thinking of going on this course. Once again, thanks to yourself and Ric for a fantastic weekend and looking forward to the Scotland Matterhorn training weekend.

I had an excellent weekend. Rock climbing in big boots was new for me. It was good to learn some new techniques such as moving together. The weekend was great for my motivation. Before I started my drive home on Monday morning I even made a quick ascent of Snowdon!

I was very impressed with Callum. He is clearly an excellent rock climber. He was very enthusiastic and wanted to share his knowledge, experience and advice throughout the course.  I look forward to visiting the Alps next Summer to climb the Matterhorn….Regards George

Just wanted to let you know that Rob and I had a great trip on Gran Paradiso. It certainly lived up to the expectations and was memorable given the winter conditions.  Thor and Gavin were sound guides and provided excellent knowledge and great experience.  You have two very satisfied customers who hope to do more in the future.
It was a learning curve having to cope with the altitude and we now realise the kind of fitness levels we will need to reach in the future.  We are going to take some time out now for a few weeks and assess our performance levels and what we can realistically achieve in the next two years. The Matterhorn is on the list but we need to get much fitter and sharpen our technical skills.
Thanks for a great trip, we thoroughly enjoyed it.  Rob & Gary

I learned and took a lot from the alpine intro course. We are now ready to face new challenges and climb more mountains. We will see you next year to join another course that will guarantee us of our independence in the mountain. Hopefully Phil will be available to do the course.

Thank you – we are very happy to have booked with HGM and done the Grand Paradiso, it was well over our expectations!  It was the perfect level of mountain for us too, as it pushed both physically and a little bit beyond our comfort zone, so we all picked up new experiences and knowledge for the next challenge.
Best of feedback to Robin too, he was extremely knowledgeable and experienced, which alleviated any concerns & taught us new things, and he also had the insight to suggest the change of plan, which gave us a super weather day on the mountain and less stress to enjoy it.
I speak for all of us saying we’d highly recommend HMG and the GP course!  Kind regards, Rickard

Feedback on the course, I found it a great experience. The guides were excellent, very knowledgeable , friendly and patient.  It was also good the way Guy gave us some tips on scrambling technique (ie face out as much as you can) – you don’t always get this on mountaineering courses as often the instructors are too busy just getting everyone up the route.

Once again thanks for everything and I have some great memories to look back on.  Regards, Robert

What a brilliant experience I had climbing Gran Paradiso with an excellent guide Andy Nelson and 4 other amazing and passionate alpinists. The trip turned out to be a great psychological and physical challenge, fantastic opportunity to meet like minded people, to socialize and get more ideas about future climbing opportunities. The whole course was organized fantastically, very professional service from the moment I arrived in Chamonix. I am looking forward to more trips with High Mountain Guides and highly recommend the company to anyone interested in climbing and/or mountaineering adventures

Dear Rob,

I just wanted to say thanks for organising the alpine intro course.

It all went well.

Phil did a really good job, particularly changing the ascent on the final 2 days due to poor weather at Gran Paradiso. (The Team climbed the Parrotspitze (4432m) instead in the Monte Rosa Massif.

It was a lot of fun and educationally very helpful,   The crag climbing day was very good, particularly practising prusiks and rescue set ups close to the crag.

Thanks again. Ben Jeffcote

Thank you for facilitating another great adventure for us.
The programme, including Entreves and Weissmies before Mont Blanc, was perfect preparation.
Alberto, as lead guide and programme director, was brilliant. The balance of his relaxed style, fantastic capability, and care and attentiveness to others was a big part of what made the trip not only successful but also fantastically enjoyable.
Of course, the weather helped too!
I’m sure there will be future projects!
Thanks again, John

Whilst waiting for the ferry under a grey sky I have time to reflect on  a Superb 7 day Mt Blanc programme with Alberto & Robin. I know I also speak for John and Simon in expressing our huge thanks and appreciation for the thought and effort that you and the team put in to maximising our experience, enjoyment and success.
I would like to sing Alberto’s praises. Not only is he an impressively competent Alpine guide; he has been great company, really easy to get on with. His easy style belies an invisible knack of knowing when and how to push us and look after us all in equal measure at each stage of the programme. We all appreciated how much Alberto cares and thinks about the best way for us….although he doesn’t say so….he just makes it happen. For me, inspite of the perfect conditions, Mt Blanc was a massive physical challenge and Alberto’s care and support enabled me to reach the summit. Thanks Alberto for a great week

Hi Rob, Forty eight hours on its finally sunk in and I must say what a superb job you did psychologically and physically getting me to the top. Your very nuanced preparation about what to expect where and when both beforehand at a large scale and on the mountain itself yard by yard made a massive difference to me. You somehow managed to get a naturally cautious person who was feeling genuinely apprehensive to keep moving steadily up and down, particularly in the down stage when the adrenaline had run out along with my energy. Your technical skill (even to the inexperienced) is obvious but your blend of attention to safety and your willingness to explain what’s happening and what needs to be done and to involve me in the decision making, even under pressured circumstances, was exceptional. So chapeau to you!!

We had a very active and enjoyable week and felt very lucky to have landed Robin as our guide (not sure he felt the same about us!)  Although we obviously didn’t get a crack at Dufour we had plenty of variety – all of which we were very happy with.   Our time on rock highlighted just how weak I am in my upper body and will look at improving on that between now and our next trip!!  We very much enjoyed Robin who obviously has a lot of experience and knows his ‘stuff’.  We would be very happy to be guided by him again.  The only minor disappointment was the lack of our promised ‘rest day’ although no doubt Robin will say we weren’t deserving of one!!

Hi Rob, Just to let you know I had great weekend with Gavin. ‎On Saturday, having regard to the indifferent weather conditions, we did the Crochues Traverse – made more interesting given the wet rock.
Yesterday we climbed  Mani Puliti (5b) and in the afternoon we headed back down to the valley and did some climbing on a rock face near Chamonix ( I forget the name) where I managed my first lead.
Enormously enjoyable and satisfying weekend – many thanks to you and Gav‎, as always.

Many thanks for a great week! Everything about the trip, from initial booking through to final peak, has been exceptional.  Stefano was an excellent guide who kept Carl and I going when we were close to running on empty. Sharing a coffee in margarita hut after that climb was a highlight and I’m already planning my next trip.
Another plus was sharing an evening meal with Christophe Profit at the Gniffeti hut.  You don’t get to do that everyday!

I learnt so much from Stefano who was absolutely excellent. I’m also glad that my training paid off – Andy and I got to the Margarita hut without too much hassle and in a respectable time. I need to work a bit on my dodgy head for heights though (if that’s possible…). Stefano was great at pushing me when he knew that I was beginning to start bricking it!

‘I have climbed the Eiger’! I still cant believe it!
I decided to attempt the Eiger after successfully climbing the Matterhorn with ‘High Mountain Guides’  last summer  and being very happy with the service provided.
I have to say that Rob at ‘High Mountain Guides’ and Mike (my excellent guide) both did everything in their power to help me achieve my goal. When the weather and booked out huts threatened to put a spanner in the works, together these guys hatched a plan and with a few changes everything came together nicely.

I had a wonderful time and appreciate the work you put into getting the trip organized. We had a very diverse group of abilities and interesest, but I think we all got a lot out of the experience and were able to push ourselves while feeling safe the whole time. The equipment was great and I don’t think anyone had any problems with it.
Robin and Thor were both very capable guides. They had to do some re-evaluation of the plan once they got to know us and I think they made good decisions about what was doable. With my interest in plants I was hoping they would know a bit more about the living side of the alps, but I understand that was not their role.
If you want a more succinct soundbite: “Rob did a fantastic job of planning every detail of our trip and providing the highest quality guides and gear. I’d recommend High Mountain Guides to anyone who wants to get into the mountains with someone who knows what they’re doing!”

This was my forth trip with Rob and third time taking a group of school pupils with HMG. Each time, we tweek and improve the schedule and this year was no exception. With Rob’s eye for detail and thorough planning, the 12 pupils aged 14-18 all had a truly amazing experience including the Aiguille Tour,; harder routes on the Tete Blanche; Marbree ridge; Entreves traverse ; topping off the trip in the Cosmique Hut and routes on the Pt Lachenal; Cosmique Arete & Arete Laurence. A smashing 9 days with some great rock climbing at Les Contamines. I thoroughly recommend Rob for planning and guiding your adventure, whether it’s a gnarly North face or gentle glacier traverse. The guides that he employs are all first class professional mountaineers who interact well on a personal level too.

You could not have selected better instructor/ guides. It was a privilege and honor to be with them. If I have the chance to return to Chamonix…and if I can somehow get beyond the 5.4 level, I would so much like to climb with them again.

Job well done, Rob !  Your company, your guides, your integrity are awesome.

It was disappointing not to have done Mont Blanc bearing in mind we had been working towards it for a while, and conditions for making the summit seemed good.  But we simply needed more time to acclimatise, so it was a sensible decision.  Gran Paradiso was our first 4000m peak so that felt like an achievement in any case.
The climbing with Twid was fantastic. He’s a legend. And we learnt a great deal about trad climbing. We’re already planning a climbing trip to Wales….and we just remortgaged the house to buy a trad rack 🙂

The course was extremely informative, and Dylan was not only great guide in transferring lots of the knowledge, but absolutely great company to be in.  Very patient and engaging, and greatly attuned to the group, I absolutely enjoyed every moment. On third day we climbed quite interesting and exposed ridge, and I valued a lot that Dylan guided us, as otherwise, I would perhaps never attempt to climb such areas.  It was rather unfortunate that three days were not longer. For the first time I got detailed explanation on various aspects of climbing, rope techniques, and crevasse rescue, and I feel now that my base knowledge is much more solid so I can work on getting more experience.  Doris.

The first day was a reminder of the limitations altitude can place on the unacclimatised body; a small price to pay for a gentle journey from the Skyway lift to the Aiguille d’Entrèves (3,604m).

Day Two was something of a revelation, some very enjoyable roped scrambling in the Chamonix Valley gave me the confidence I needed for the short but exposed summit ridge on the Gran Paradiso.

A night in the welcoming and superbly appointed Refugio Chabod preceded a dawn start on a sustained but not technical climb. Plenty of soft snow made it hard going – for me –  but otherwise the conditions were excellent. We had the summit, uncharacteristically, to ourselves. The return found the snow slushy and very heavy going. As usual, and thankfully, Rob retained his patient professional demeanour, with the walk below the snow line a delight amidst pine forest and wild flowers.

A thoroughly enjoyable three days – to be recommended to anybody who fancies a 4,000m peak.

Hi Rob. Back 10 days now and only just feeling normal again. But just wanted to say, without my trips to chamonix, I would never have made it. All rope work from Camp one onwards and coming down a lot of smooth blue ice. If I had not gained that experience I would have never made it up because I would have been too scared of coming down !!!

I thoroughly enjoyed the weekend and was pleased with what I achieved. James is an excellent teacher and guide and most importantly I felt completely safe which has improved my confidence and encouraged me to continue. I consider myself very lucky to have had a one on one experience. Thank you and please pass on my thanks to James, and also Matt who was equally encouraging and knowledgeable.  Both made the whole experience really positive and enjoyable.

Thank you for your email and the feedback : ) It was a wonderful weekend and I feel I have learnt lots! I would definitely be interested in continuing and learning more technical skills and doing more technical climbs. I think you guys have given me the mountain bug: ). I will definitely update you re Mont Blanc. Have a wonderful week.  (See Below)

Really glad that we did have those early starts though since the easier days when we started later were actually pretty hard work under that mid morning/midday sun. Now I have an idea of how strong the sun is here in May I will never object to early starts again!
It was a great week, even though the weather went a bit mixed towards the end and we couldn’t do either the Dom or the Dufourspitze, but I am pretty used to having to switch plans to work around the weather, so it wasn’t entirely unexpected! I really enjoyed the booting up/down the Tour Ronde anyway, so it was a nice finish.  Thanks again for the hard work trail breaking and trip planning both in advance and during the week.

First, thank you thank you so much for taking the brief to help me prepare to climb Mt Toubkal and for arranging such a great weekend! Thank you for all the research and planning that went into the two days before we arrived to provide an experience of altitude and an ascent. We really appreciated the early morning debrief in a café and time to sort out the kit before we started each day.  The clear professionalism of your approach and ability to adapt to the changing weather conditions engendered great confidence. I am now back at my desk and reflecting on what we have done. The two days were so different – I find it hard to believe I have trekked at altitude across a glacier in awe inspiring conditions and experienced the rockier pathways above the tree line. I now have a real sense of what to expect and how to manage myself.  It has been a hugely exciting and very memorable two days!

I just wanted to say a huge thank you for what we now refer to as our ‘second best week skiing ever’ (the best week will always be the first week we learnt to ski!) We took some convincing to sign up as we weren’t sure about spending so much on a week of lessons but I’m so glad Fran convinced us as the course has given us so much new knowledge and skills that our ski holidays from now on are going to be completely different.

On the Saturday after the course we skied together and had a chance to put our route finding skills into practice. It was fantastic to be able to assess the conditions, look for the best snow and consider the safety of the bit of off piste we were looking at doing. To top it off we skied it with a new found style and confidence. I don’t have any constructive feedback as I wouldn’t have changed a thing.  Hope to see you both again on another course maybe…

Just wanted to say that the weekend lived up to all expectations. The location And scenery was stunning especially on Saturday on  Ben Nevis. Sunday on Stob Ban was  completely opposite with the wet weather but contributed to giving a real experience of the highlands and how quickly it can change.
Jonathan was great company and his experience and guidance were welcomed and added to the overall training, please pass on my appreciation. Loving the work on the snow with the crampons and the scrambling and rope work.
I have come back with a taste for more and will spend the next week considering plans for the future to continue my mountaineering journey, perhaps a trip in the Alps will be next. I will let you know when I have made a decision.  Finally thank you for the well organised trip from start to finish you have been always there to answer questions which helped with my planning and preparation.

Thanks again for a truly incredible week – it’s safe to say we are still both buzzing! Saturday night and Sunday morning were spent eating the majority of the patisserie in Chamonix whilst trying to fully absorb and recount everything we learnt over the course of the week.  I’ve just downloaded the photos – they are brilliant and an amazing momentum of the week. Thank you so much.
Although very briefly disappointed to not be going for Plan A due to sentimental reasons, your forewarning, honestly and knowledge (and general weather guru-ness!) made sure that there was never a moment I doubted we were going to have an amazing week. The variation of each day and skiing was superb and I think we both felt you pushed us the perfect amount. For me, the Balmhorn was a particular highlight – although I loved it all! On top of this was the amount we learnt – in a way not being able to go ahead with the original agenda taught us far more about how to plan, gather information and safely continue on our adventures. I have no doubt this will be invaluable for the future.
I’ll make sure we stay in touch, both Tom and I feel there is a lot more we would like to learn in the future and we’d be keen for more alpine and ski mountaineering adventures! In the meantime, I hope you finally get to enjoy some spring conditions!

Hetty & Tom, Ski Mountaineering Week In The Swiss / Italian & French Alps, April 2018

Rob and high mountain guides played an instrumental part in my planning for skiing the Haute Route this year. I had not done any ski touring prior to this year, so the Haute Route was always going to be a challenge, therefor it was very important to me to get in as much training and familiarity as possible. Early on in our communication, Rob and I planned a couple of courses to make sure I’d get in enough training for the Haute route, from an intro weekend, to a 5 day intro week with an overnight in an mountain hut night and high mountain touring. I also wanted to focus on mountaineering as it features fairly regularly on the haute route, so Rob and I planned an additional weekend practicing mountaineering skills, which I was very grateful for, even though the weather was a complete white out. We were rewarded with a fun powder day in Italy on the last day though. 🙂

Rob’s communication, planning and attention to detail is second to none and my time with High Mountain Guides during this winter was invaluable. I’ m already looking at booking more courses with them for next year and I’ve definitely been bitten by the ski touring bug.

We finally arrived home late last night after a brilliant few days of
skiing in Chamonix. We felt incredibly lucky to have managed a brief
trip to the mountains and some excellent time exploring the
backcountry with you.

The two days contained just the right combination of travel, ascent, skiing and adventure for us.

Thank you Miles for such a fantastic time, and thank you Rob for your help in organising it all.

Dear Rob and Tim, just a brief email to thank you both for the guiding last week.
Whilst the conditions conspired against high mountain adventures, you both provided a really well tailored set of experiences that were great fun, safe but adventurous where possible and very educational. I know Ian and Chris both enjoyed the two days together we had together with Tim and I certainly enjoyed my two days before that with both of you.
Many thanks indeed for your time and efforts in putting this together, it is really appreciated.  Best wishes, Simon

Pleasure to receive your email and the photos. Really good photos there, thank you for taking the effort and time to take them.  I really enjoyed the course and I think our team really had a good atmosphere, I felt if in need people would look after me and that is a good feeling when you are in the mountains. Many thanks to both you and Alison for creating that special and fun atmosphere,  I learned a lot, got to the places where I never imagined being and I am very happy I could be part of it. It really was a pleasure and an unique experience.  Ski touring really does open a whole new path to many adventures. I am also thankful you recommended Ski Breezy to me, such a great place to stay in Chamonix. I hope to take part in the future courses and trips as well.  Happy skiing, Karen

What a great way to end our holiday! After more than a week of skiing in and around Chamonix the weather finally came good and we were able to fulfil a long-held ambition of taking on the Vallée Blanche. Despite some crusty snow high up the ‘easy’ route from the top of the Hellbronner lift was a delight, with astonishing views. For the most part the skiing is straightforward, but for the likes of us that is only possible with an accomplished guide. We’ve skied with Rob many times and he knows our limits (which are comparatively modest). As a result, we had a splendid day surrounded by breath-taking scenery. Rob has the great ability to instil absolute confidence while making the whole experience fun and informative – the mark of a true professional.

Just back from a great trip to the Chamonix Valley, including three terrific days of ski-touring with High Mountain Guides. Two of the days involved stand-out tours, one of the Aiguilles Rouges, including the classic Crochues Berade traverse. A couple of days later we stuck with the powder and found some great velvet turns high under the North Face of Les Droites having traversed in from the Grands Montets top station. The intervening day was taken up with a demanding but equally rewarding Vallée Blanche tour, beginning at the Midi station, travelling over to the Hellbronner mid-station and down into Chamonix from there. I’ve climbed and skied with Rob often over nearly 10 years and every time it has been excellent.

[Thanks Tom – Here’s to another 10 years, Ed!]

 Hi Rob,

I think we can safely say the group had a great day! The perfect weather and experience generally made up for the  variable snow conditions and when in the mountains you have to take what’s given to you.

Gavin was a great guide, source of information about the mountains/area and really looked after us (e.g. picking us up from our accommodation and dropping us back off). We had the feeling we were in very safe hands and from my perspective safety is the reason for paying for a guide.

Just to let you know what a fantastic week I ( and I am sure we ) had last week. Your attention to detail and your personal touch made a really great course with plenty of information. I can honestly say it was the best ( and hardest ) weeks skiing I have ever had.
Kenny is a great guide and teacher , his personality and people management skills show through in all he does. It goes without saying he is an accomplished mountaineer and skier whose passion and drive seeps down to his clients.
Currently back in the UK wondering where the mountains have gone. Will be keeping an eye out for another course or trip with yourselves.  Best of luck with the rest of the season.

Seriously, thanks very much for the guiding and company over the last few days, it’s great to spend time in the mountains with someone who really knows his stuff – it’s a magical area and I’m definitely up for going back to have a go at getting to the top – after a lot of ‘bull’s eye’ training. Those weekends next spring sound good and as you say maybe even a trip to Chamonix.

I thoroughly enjoyed the trip. It was good fun. We were fortunate with the weather. Although in cloud on the summit, it cleared on the descent and Kevin’s  photo on the summit came out despite the cold (photos attached). The via ferrata next day was a good alternative to the high winds forecast for the heights & our tired knees.

Hey Rob,

Just wanted to say thank you for my week here and the expertise that I have been privy to whilst in Chamonix.

Despite finding the glacier work tricky, I have thoroughly enjoyed my final few days  climbing with Robbie. His patience, humour, empathy  and amazing skill has meant  I have progressed from complete beginner outside, to doing a 5b, in 48 hours!

The way you have liaised with me over many months has been superb and I have never felt unsupported by your company or left with unanswered questions.

I will be looking to do some more rock climbing next spring (hopefully with Robbie!) so will be in touch,

Many thanks and best wishes,

Anna

Just wanted to say I really enjoyed the Weismass trip and Robin was a very good and friendly guide. He let us do some sport climbing on the first day putting up ropes for us. Also performed some excellent navigation to come down from Alallinhorn summit when the clouds came in and visibility was extremely low. For the rest of the time he was happy to answer our questions and give advice and always made sure we were not being pushed too far.
Thank you, Richard

It was a really great couple of days and Robin was excellent. It was good doing the south ridge ascent and decent of the Weissmies in tougher conditions, enjoyable and sustained scrambling topped off with low visibility summit ridge was so cool. The Allalinhorn was awesome with the glacial features, bridges etc and the snow slopes were a nice contrast to the scrambling of the previous day.

The Wales Matterhorn preparation 2 days was a great introduction to the type of climbing and movement required to have a successful Matterhorn trip and I would recommend it to anyone who is thinking of going for the big one.  This was followed by a specific training period out in Chamonix, before and during Rob and his team could not have been more helpful, all ending up with a successful and enjoyable summit and return.  As a result of the challenge, support and fun I have had I am now busy planning next years adventure….

Just wanted to say how fantastic the August 3 day Gran Paradiso trip was, despite me now nursing pretty unsightly feet it was well worth it!
I had a real laugh but as I’d hoped, learnt practical alpine skills as well as about myself and my own capabilities. I was lucky to have such an excellent team and felt safe and supported at all times with Jonny, who was so patient and tolerant when I was having some doubts and having my own Type III fun! I have had such a great time and will definitely be back….(maybe when my toe nails grow back?!:)

It’s been really worthwhile, and many thanks to Jon. He’s a great teacher. The days up the midi were invaluable and thoroughly enjoyable. I feel so much better prepared to start touring and have a wealth of new skills to work on. Really fantastic! Today I discovered that I absolutely hate rock climbing, which in itself is no bad thing. I’ve never been great with heights, but I wasn’t expecting to feel that freaked out! I was gripping on like a limpet! But john was great. Can’t say as id ever like to set foot on rock again, but I  survived, got humbled, learnt about myself, and ultimately figured out how to (just about) get control of my fear to get the job done…. That might one day prove to be the most valuable thing I picked up. So seriously, many thanks.

Take care, Jeremy.

We started our descend from the Midi station at exactly 8:00am… and we were unbelievable back up at exactly 10:20am. That is something of a testament to the huge progress we’ve made over the past six days.
This has been an amazing six days, with huge progress and most of all, absolutely stunning routes, great fun and memories to last a lifetime. I will be back!!!
All the best,
Ilari

Base of the Hornli Ridge on the Matterhorn. At last, it’s possible to relax and enjoy the satisfaction of the climb & summit reached before the sustained descent.

With thanks to  ‘High Mountain Guides’ I have achieved my dream and climbed the Matterhorn! I decided about a year ago that this was what I wanted to do and I spent a lot of time researching companies that offered this objective.

I decided to go with ‘High Mountain Guides’ after chatting to Rob via email and because they offered a preparation weekend in Snowdonia and I knew they would be able to assess me and gauge if I was fit for this challenge. The weekend proved so useful and I was pointed in the right direction with regard to my training programme.
The pre Matterhorn training around Chamonix was great and included some classic climbs which were great preparation and allowed my guide to get to know me and assess my climbing ability and fitness.
The summit day was definitely tough just under 9hours in total and certainly requires great stamina and endurance but it was a fantastic feeling when we arrived back at the Hornli hut for a celebratory drink!
Thanks again!

Superb summit views from the Weissmies and a fine ascent from Mitch & Ashley with Robin in August 2017

Hey Rob, We had an amazing time on the trip, thank you so much for making everything come together in such a convenient and seamless manner for us.

Robin was great, in addition to getting us to the Weissmies summit we really appreciated that he took the time to teach us valuable mountaineering skills, cater to our interests, and allow us to climb as a team on the E Ridge of Grand Montets.
We definitely will be looking to spend more time in the Alps in the future and will reach out to you if we are looking for further guided itineraries or recommendations.
Thanks, Mitch & Ashley

Climbed as a brilliant alternative to a snowy Eiger & Matterhorn.

It was a great week, and thanks to you and Gavin for putting it together. I thought the Dent Blanche was a great alternative to the Eiger and I was very proud to get up and down, particularly without the aid of Chamonix lifts or Swiss mountain trains, which made it feel like a more genuine expedition.

Thank you also for the feedback. I’m definitely keen to tackle some of those other routes, and I had a good session with Gavin on the final day working on ways to safely speed up progress on that kind of ground.
I thought Gavin was a great guide – I felt 100% safe under his watch, and I was particularly struck by his thorough approach towards his own personal safety too, which set a very good example. He was a good laugh too, and it was fun to have Sam along for the Dent Blanche section.
All the best for the rest of the season. I hope to be back for some winter climbing and skiing at the start of next year, and hopefully something again next summer.

Rob,What can I say…
It’s taken 2 years to get me here and you and your guides have helped me through the training both physical and mental that I needed to realise my dream of climbing Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn.  At the end of the day you need a bit of luck with the weather but you have to be ready when you get that window.
The training advice you gave and the snowdonia weekend all gave great insight into what was needed and the size of the challenge ahead.  I trained as hard as I could and then with the help of your amazing guide Mike on arrival in Chamonix we started with Plan A and created back up plans for each day should anything get in the way.  As it was we had a pretty stormy week to start off with , but because of the flexibility in your approach we were able to tailor the program and still get great routes in whilst watching the weather in Zermatt.
I must make others aware of the amazing care and engagement offered by you whilst we have been out here.
It means a lot when everyone is working actively towards your goal.  We could see there was a possible window and you knew how much I wanted it so at the risk of me losing another climb you allowed me to head to Hornli where again we met British guides who have worked with you many times and gave us great information.
The fact that you and your company is held in such high esteem by guides Home and away speaks volumes.  As I stood on top of the Matterhorn I was in heaven but I knew also just how happy you would be.  I cannot recommend highly enough.  If you are looking for a challenge and want honest , supportive, active, expert guiding with no nonsense then this is the company for you. But don’t forget, you will have to work your ass off to make your dreams come true.
Happy to speak to anyone who may want a chat about future climbing with you and cannot speak highly enough of your company philosophy in that you take people to the beautiful Alps and push them to attain their dreams in a positive , safe, friendly and enjoyable way. Chapeau to you for creating the conduit to such amazing lifelong memories.
Thank you for getting me here….Here’s to more adventures

Hi Rob,
Just a quick and belated note to thank you for my few days in Chamonix. Neil was a superb guide, great company, and we got in some great climbing and skiing, both tailored well to my level.
Thankfully the weather was better than expected so we managed some really big and exciting days.
Many thanks, Simon

Sorry for the delayed reply – Dave was straight out on exped when we got home and I knew he would want to be included in giving the feedback!

We had a fantastic trip – didn’t really know what we were expecting, but it was better than we expected!!  Ben was excellent, we hope we didn’t scar him mentally for life!  Weather conditions were obviously fantastic, but even if they hadn’t been we were so confident in Ben he could have made us see sunshine through a storm (and then made us move quicker!).

Feedback (from Dave)  – excellent.  What he liked was that it was very much tailored to our (in)abilities and it really pushed us.  The flexibility really made it work.  The only area Dave would change with hindsight would be the kit selection – we opted for warmer clothing and left our lighter stuff in the UK.  As it turned out we could have done with having both on hand.  That said, if the weather hadn’t been kind, we would have been really grateful for the warm stuff and Ben the Oracle made sure we only packed what we needed on the summit attempt (he made Dave leave his Ronhills behind!).

It has really inspired us to do more in the Alps, and Dave has now signed up for his IML Summer assessment, although his rope work will still never meet Ben’s standard!

Sorry we missed you at the car boot!!

Hope to work with you again,

Thanks for a great experience!

All the Best,

Alpine Training & Mt Blanc Ascent

Sorry for the late reply, we just got home yesterday from the French Riviera.

Thankfully both John and I fully recovered now, although it took a good week after our climb before we could walk properly again!  We had an amazing time, as Johnny would call it ” level 2 fun”. I can honestly say it was the hardest I have ever pushed myself in my life in terms of endurance and perseverance.

Thank you again, I cant explain how much fun we had 😊

I should say that it was an epic weekend with Jeff – he really is a fantastic person to climb with and very good coach. Perfectly fitted the bill for me. We definitely pushed the envelope, especially with the Eperon and Cosmiques Arete in one day, but that was exactly what I wanted out of the trip. The Midi refuge was also a good call from Jeff – very surprised to see most of the guests still asleep at 8am (not being climbers)! Thanks to you also for organising/facilitating so smoothly.

I’m keen to continue developing my technique and build on these first big alpine routes. Will be considering options for the winter and next summer, but definitely intending to climb with you and Jeff again. Will be in touch.

Best

Hi rob what can I say , it has been truly amazing.
Jon has been fantastic and I’m glad we went for it as the wind is gusting up there this morning.

It has been an absolute pleasure dealing with you and your guides having met a few are really a cut above.
Thank you for helping me achieve my dream 👍

Mont Blanc Summit At Dawn – Early Autumn Ascent

Mt Blanc 26th sept – 1 oct‏‎

Hi Rob, it’s Ben here from the recent Gran Paradiso trip.

I want to feedback how much I enjoyed the trip and how highly I recommend Ben. I cant put into words how wonderful the whole experience was and what it meant to me to successfully summit my first 4000er. I’ve had good guides before but Ben was just on another level. I had complete confidence in his ability and judgements throughout and he was a superb companion to us and I thoroughly enjoyed climbing with him. I was inspired by his dedication to our trip but also to mountaineering and his great attitude.

Gran Paradiso Ascent – 3 Day Course

Hello Rob and Phil,

I am back home now, savoring the wonderful memories I collected in the Alps — and readjusting to the time-zone change.  I enjoyed my Alpine adventures very much, and I enjoyed Phil’s company and expertise — and his willingness to accommodate my wishes.  With one exception, all my objectives were met, and I am especially pleased that I was able to add on the Monch and the Jungfrau to my list of summits climbed.  Thanks again for arranging for me to climb Mont Blanc earlier than planned so that we could enjoy the superb weather.

The one objective not met?  We could never find any Edelweiss growing in the wild!

After I have had time to catch up on all the stuff that has piled up here at home in my absence, I would like to share some of my observations and thoughts on the queuing of climbing parties and protocol for overtaking slower parties on popular routes.  Phil and I already had some discussion about this while driving back to Chamonix the last day.

Thanks to both of you for making my Alpine adventures so pleasant and successful.

John

Mission Impossible!

Rob,
Apologies for delay but would just like to say thanks for 3 great days. The traverse of Aiguilles d’Entreves was spectacular and, as always, I learned a lot on the way. I was gutted that I was feeling too rough to complete the Dent du Geant on day 2 but enjoyed the short morning to the ridge. Definitely a route for another time. The 6a climb on the Brevant was just great. A perfect choice for the weather that day. Loved the lesson in crevasse rescue back at the hotel. Have been practising with my wife. It has transformed our approach for the better I think.
Thanks for your time, patience, imparted knowledge and company. Hopefully it will be less than 7 years before we meet again.
Very best wishes

Hi Rob

Some of our team were questioning the decision to cancel Mont Blanc

They had heard that other teams were going and thought our team might have been over cautious

Maybe set some expectations regarding the risks associated with the grand couloir aka death valley

Or better share a YouTube video with them https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSzUubnCPPM

Good call by the way and I’m happy to be back safe ;o)

I had a great time and have a huge amount of respect for the challenges you guys face with difficult clients

Good luck and best wishes

Thanks Rob,
As mentioned yesterday, we really enjoyed the weekend & thought it was a very well organised & professional two day training & we learned loads. Our guide/instructor, Jon, was great in every way and we loved the Plas Coch B&B, we’re hoping to be able to come back in the beginning of July for some more training before our Matterhorn attempt week later in July.
Thanks a million!
Would be lovely to see you and/or some of the others at some point.

Hi Rob, Just wanted to say a huge thank you….
I knew that the weekend would be good and be great practice, but I had no idea how much of a change occurred in me.   To go from grade 1 scrambling to amphitheater buttress has left me with a confidence in myself that I did not expect.
In no way do I mean that the programme will be easy, just that I now know that I can deal with the technical aspects. I know I can deal with exposure and stay focused and I know that I will do all that I can to be physically ready.
A wonderful weekend with like minded people all with a passion for the outdoors.
Amazing instructors and incredibly flexible programme to work around weather and get the maximum training.
Can’t wait 👍

Hi Rob,

Myself and Jamie had a great weekend in Wales and Rick was a great guide.
I think he’s left us both with a lot to think about before we attempt the Matterhorn.

Many thanks

Thanks Rob

I really enjoyed the weekend (more in hindsight to be fair) as I was pretty much taken to my current limits physically, technically and mentally on the cneifion arete, I didn’t ever feel too scared or too unsave – and nobody actually fell and had to actually test the rope! Ric was great, I think the training day made me look and feel a little better than I was on the real sustained pitch – which I made it up and down OK – but my fluidity (partially based on confidence) became more of an issue and this made me expel much more energy than is prudent to do so. I can work on fitness and some technical aspects but I really need more practical experience of alpine ascents before attempting something like the Matterhorn.
Thanks again
James
