Ski Guide

Kevin Avery

Kev is a full time IFMGA guide, based in the Chamonix valley where he lives with his wife.  He particularly enjoys technical rock and mixed climbing, as well as ski touring and off piste skiing and as a former teacher, he loves how guiding enables him to pass his skills and love of the mountains on to his clients.

He’s also a magazine gear editor and prolific online reviewer and therefore a great source of knowledge on all things kit!

Kev grew up in Cumbria on the doorstep of the Lake District, taking up rock climbing as a young teenager he was immediately hooked. He quickly developed a passion for adventures on the rock, working his way through the classic Lakes trad test-pieces, and soon moving on to Scottish winter and then Alpinism and skiing. Over the last 25 years he has amassed an extensive ticklist of climbs from classic alpine to hard sport climbs and ski tours and off piste itineraries across Europe. Seeing himself as a bit of an all-rounder, he is just as happy pulling hard on the local limestone as he is on a blower powder day.

Dave Cramer,  Chamonix Ski Mountaineering Guided Day, Feb 2020

I could not have been more pleased with the tour and with Kev. It was perfect for me—a true introduction to ski mountaineering, with kick turns and ropework. I felt like I learned a lot without ever being in over my head. I’ve hiked a bit in the Aiguilles Rouges, and I love the complex terrain and ever-changing dramatic scenery. There’s nothing like skinning for a while, remembering to look over your shoulder, and be staring right at the North Face of the Grand Jorasses.  Kev was not only good company, but I was quite impressed with his guiding skills. I very much appreciated his thoughtful approach to risk management. Halfway down the descent, we switched to axes and crampons for a bit to cross a significant patch of ice, which other skiers had fallen on. I also liked how he always kept me informed about where we were headed, what to expect, etc. Good communication really helps make for an enjoyable day. Many thanks to you both for a great experience. I’ll be back!
