Despite heavy rain yesterday much of the Tour d’Areu crags were dry although there were a few wet streaks evident in places. We climbed Cocabana on the 4th tour which was good climbing in good conditions, in the sun but pleasant with a breeze. A few wet streaks but nothing very problematical. Likewise, the approach goat paths and grass had largely dried off so whilst we did take micro spikes for the trainers and an ice axe, this wasn’t really necessary even for the small patch of snow to cross in the gully near the end of the approach to the 4th Tower.
25 November 2024, Chapelle Saint-Gras, Vallée du Giffre
Nice and warm, almost too hot in the sun, which arrived on the secteur Coucou Chérie around 11am although numerous wet streaks on the crag. Numerous routes totally dry however including Quai des Brumes L hand variant, a good 6c+ with a tricky crux move. The secteur Dents de la Mort seemed totally dry and was very warm in the sun. The 6c ‘Libre Opposition’ packs in some sustained hard climbing right at the top and it would be easy to fall with the chain nearly in reach! The 8a ‘Fin de Chantier’ currently has clips in above the first 2 bolts.

Cold morning (-2C) in Sallanches but nice and warm on the middle / upper sections by 10am. Almost too warm! But chilly lower down with dappled light through the trees – both for belaying and cold on the rock. Pleasant in the sun until it disappeared at 12 noon, then fine in the shade, pretty good conditions until the forest went in to the shade mid afternoon and the humidity started building.
